Rich in Her Gifts to Our Students
Call retired NIACC librarian Karen Dole on any given day and she might be at a Habitat for Humanity board meeting or working at the Habitat ReStore. She might be traveling, volunteering for RSVP or enjoying a NIACC Lifelong Learning Institute class. You might catch her at home working on a newsletter for a women's educator society. In fact, it doesn't take long to see just how passionate she is about education.
That's why she established the Karen Dole Scholarship through the NIACC Foundation. "Part of the reason I'm doing this is because of my own experience," said Dole, who relied heavily on financial aid for her degrees in foreign language education and library science. "I've seen the impact on students," added Dole, who spent 33 years in the NIACC library teaching students how to do research.
Her endowed scholarship will provide an annual gift of $500. "I'm not rich. You don't have to give it all at once," said Dole, who developed her scholarship over time. "You can give part of the money as you have it. Plus, you can see the benefit of what you're doing now."
Dole attends the annual NIACC Foundation Scholarship Recognition Luncheon and participates in the Foundation's Scholarship Reader Night because she enjoys learning about students who apply for scholarships. She knows that many stay in North Iowa after graduation. They are, she says, "the nurses I had for my knee replacements and the auto mechanics who work on my car. Many people who do those jobs went to NIACC for their training."
Dole hopes to add to the fund through a bequest. "I don't know if I'll end up with $500 in my estate or $5,000. At least I know this fund is established and students are benefiting from it already." She added, "I feel good about that!"
Like Karen Dole, you can make a gift of any size—at any time—and make a difference in students' lives. Contact Molly Knoll at 641-422-4404 or foundation@niacc.edu to learn more.
